Lady Warriors Come Up Short vs TCHS Despite Late Rally

The Thompson Warriors hosted area foe Tuscaloosa County Friday, Jan 18, but couldn’t come away with a win despite a strong push in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats grabbed a double digit lead in the second quarter and were able to hold off the Warriors down the stretch for a 48-41 win.

The Warriors and Wildcats traded baskets during the first quarter with London Wooley leading the way for Thompson scoring the team’s first five points. Shots weren’t easy to come by, but the Warriors kept pace by forcing their way to the free throw line. Zoria Miller’s layup made the score 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Wooley would be the only Warrior to score a basket in the second quarter as Tuscaloosa County’s perimeter defense clamped down. Thompson was winning the turnover battle, but the shots simply wouldn’t fall and the Wildcats were able to keep them off the boards. At the end of a 13-2 run that took up the rest of the first half, Tuscaloosa County held a 23-12 halftime lead.

The third quarter mirrored the first as the teams matched each other basket for basket. Lindsey Cook had her best quarter scoring five of Thompson’s 10 points, including the team’s second three pointer. The Warriors got to the free throw line another ten times, but were only able to convert three attempts allowing the Wildcats to nurture a 34-22 lead heading into the last quarter.

Until the fourth, Tuscaloosa County had done a good job holding the Warriors’ leading scorer Brooklyn Oden in check. That changed drastically as Oden scored her team’s first eight points in the quarter and 13 of their 19 points overall. London Wooley added the other six points on two three pointers, but the late push came up short as the Wildcats made enough plays to keep the Warriors at bay.

Thompson will have a quick turnaround and host Helena Saturday, Jan 19 at 4:30 p.m. and get their next shot at an area win Tuesday, Jan 22 at 6 p.m. when the Hoover Buccaneers visit Warrior Arena for the first time
