Warriors Fall to Oak Mountian in Final Area Matchup

The Oak Mountain Eagles got a tough win on the road to get a season sweep of the Thompson Warriors Friday, Jan 25, to lock up the no. 2 seed in the area tournament that begins next Monday, Feb 4. The Eagles were white hot from the perimeter to start the game and staved off runs from the Warriors in the second and third quarters to pull of the road win, 59-49.

The Eagles came out on fire from long range and took control of the game from the outset. Drew Dunn and Zane Nelson hit five consecutive three pointers to open the contest as Oak Mountain grabbed a 17-8 lead and lead 21-13 to end the first period.

Dunn kept his foot on the gas in the second quarter as well hitting two more threes to finish the half with 15. At one point he had half of his team’s points with the game at 30-22.

Tre Roberson played big for the Warriors and kept them within reach scoring all nine of Thompson’s second quarter points, including two three point bombs of his own to close the lead to 22-26. However, from there Oak Mountain scored the final seven points of the quarter to give themselves a 33-22 halftime lead.

Thompson would make another run at the lead with a good start to the third quarter. Tre Roberson continued his remarkable play hitting two more three pointers and when sophomore J.B. Mitchell hit a third the Warriors found themselves down just 36-31. Still, the Eagles responded again and closed out the quarter in familiar fashion with 12 of the last 15 points in the third quarter to preserve their lead at 48-34.

Thompson fought back in the fourth quarter, but would get no closer than 10 thanks again to Drew Dunn who scored the last six points of the game including his seventh three pointer of the night. Dunn finished with a game-high and season-high 24 points. Tre Roberson also had a season-high 19 to lead Thompson.

Thompson hosts their final regular season game against Chilton County then heads back out on the road at Helena with both games also tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
